About Conceria Walpier tannery
Founded in Ponte a Egola, at the heart of the Tuscan leather district, Conceria Walpier has been producing full-grain vegetable-tanned leather for decades. The tannery is best known for Buttero — one of the most recognizable Italian leathers on the market — as well as pebbled Dollaro and aged Museum Buttero. Every hide is slowly tanned in natural plant tannin baths using the traditional Tuscan method, and Walpier is a certified member of the Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale consortium — the guarantee of authentic Italian vegetable-tanned leather.
Which collection should you choose?
Not sure which Conceria Walpier leather suits your project? Here's a quick guide:
- Handmade wallets, cardholders and small leather goods → Buttero (classic semi-firm veg tan, develops a beautiful patina)
- Belts and straps → Buttero 2.8mm or thicker Walpier collections for structure
- Watch straps → Buttero 1.4–1.6mm
- Bags and pouches → Buttero shoulders, Dollaro for a pebbled texture
- Vintage / distressed look → Museum Buttero (aged, darker patina from the start)
- Matte, unfinished look → Mud (raw, natural surface)
If you need help choosing, contact our team — we're happy to advise on thickness, side vs shoulder, and colour matching for your project.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Conceria Walpier leather full-grain?
Yes. All Conceria Walpier collections (Buttero, Dollaro, Museum Buttero, Mud) are full-grain vegetable-tanned leather from the same Tuscan tannery.
What is Buttero leather?
Buttero is Conceria Walpier's signature vegetable-tanned leather — a semi-firm, full-grain hide with a smooth, uniform surface. It's one of the most popular Italian veg-tan leathers among makers because it develops a rich patina, holds a crease well, and works beautifully for wallets, belts, watch straps and bags.
What's the difference between Buttero and Museum Buttero?
Standard Buttero has a clean, uniform tone that develops patina over time. Museum Buttero is pre-aged during finishing — it starts with a darker, more vintage look and shows more surface character right out of the tannery.
